HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
West K x Ivanhoe Lam x Jordan Cheng [2025]
Set Design by Ruby Law
The creative direction for this project was to transform the entire theatre into a full-on music festival. From the moment audiences walked in, they were immersed in Hedwig’s world: food and drinks, tattoo art, rainbow-throwing games, and a live DJ spinning vinyl records by artists mentioned in the script. Camping chairs and bleachers were scattered throughout the space. It was chaotic, immersive, and alive, just like Hedwig herself.
Traditionally, the show takes place in a gritty dive bar with 90s rock-and-roll vibes. For this version, we reimagined a cleaner, more stripped-back aesthetic. Modular scaffolding structures retain raw energy while keeping the build low-waste. Large video walls and live-feed cameras blurred the lines between theatre and concert, creating an intimate and expansive hybrid experience.
A key design element was using stage levels to reflect Hedwig’s emotional journey. The higher she climbs, the more she reaches for control, visibility, and validation. But as she descends the long ramp, something softens: she releases the spotlight and embraces her complexity and flaws.
At the centre of it all is the Trailer Box: Hedwig’s dressing room, trailer home, and makeshift bar stage. With video content layered onto its surface, it transforms into an abstract TV screen, broadcasting memory, trauma, and glam in equal measure - A shifting space for a shifting character.
