WHITE SUMMER
Terence Lam’s Concert [2025]
Set Design by Ruby Law
White Summer is the latest concert by Hong Kong singer-songwriter Terence Lam, staged at the Hong Kong Coliseum for ten sold-out performances. Collaborating once again with London-based set designer Ruby Law of RULA Design Studio, the production reimagines the boundaries between pop concert and theatre.
At the centre of the stage stands a monumental seven-metre white cube. Conceived as a Pandora’s box, it opens, closes and transforms throughout the show, each shift revealing a new layer of narrative. At one moment, the cube unfolds and becomes a “+” symbol on the stage floor, a symbol of unison. At other times, it becomes a sculpture, a container of memories, or a projection surface for video art.
Suspended above, the circular LED screens form a counterpoint to the cube’s geometry. From certain angles, they resemble abstract glasses, framing the concert as if through another pair of eyes. Together, the square and the circle embody the dualities at the heart of White Summer: light and shadow, joy and melancholy, intimacy and spectacle.
Technically, the cube is a feat of engineering. Built from a steel frame clad in timber panels, it features a hydraulic hinge system that enables it to open or close in under ten seconds. Set on a central revolve, it rotates in space so that audiences see it from constantly changing perspectives. By using a single geometric form as both sculpture and storytelling device, RULA transforms White Summer into an immersive work of spatial design, where pop music, scenography and emotion become inseparable.
